This week, we meet Olivier a true sports adventurer, who shares with us his Fan Story. US, Europe, Korea, Australia and soon Russia, this fervent supporter and sports passionate invites us to travel thought his experience.

Hi Olivier, can you tell us briefly who you are ?

Hello everyone, my name is Olivier Chicha. I live in Australia since October 2017 where I am following sports events in Asia and Oceania. Passionate about sports and travel I decided to combine my two passions and make a world tour of sports events.

What kind of fan are you ?

A regular fan, but not season ticket holder because I live far from my favourite club. I always try to go with the most fervent supporters whatever the sport.

Which club are you supporting ? For how long ?

I have been a fan of PSG since the end of the 90s, which, among other things, I followed during their American tour in 2015. I am also a fan of the French team, which is why I will be in Russia in June and July to follow the French Team at the next World Cup. I’m really a fan of our national team since the World Cup 98. Moreover, I’m also a fan of Tennis, Cycling, Rugby and I’m following all sports in general. That explains my world tour of sports events.

Do you follow your favourite team on social medias ?

Yes!! My team but also all the news about my favourite sports and other teams and athletes of this sport. I think I spend one hour a day to check the news.

Among all your best fan memories, is there one that you would like to share with us ?

Maybe the Champions Trophy in Montreal at the Saputo stadium between PSG and Lyon in 2015. I lived in New York at that time and I was an active member of the PSG Club Supporter. We made the trip to Montreal to support our players. Members of Montreal’s PSG fan club were so many, but they did not know how to launch the songs and organize the grandstand. That’s why we had to do it with 2-3 other members of PSG NY fans. At every game in New York we met in a bar to sing our love of PSG. So I became one of the “Capo” [Captain of the grandstand] during the game. It was an amazing thing to be in this place and to see this whole tribune singing. This remains for me a great moment!

How often do you go the stadium ? Would you like to go more often ?

Living in Nice area I cannot support my team every weekend, but I go to a lot of Nice games at the Allianz Riviera. I also travel a lot in Europe to discover new stadium and new atmospheres.

“Nothing can replace the stadium, the thrill you can have when you arrive at the stadium, up the steps, hear the fervor goes up, see the full stadium.”

With whom do you like to be at the stadium ?

I’m still looking to be in the ultras stands even here in Australia where I was able to watch 4 football matches from different cities and I always went with the ultras club home. No matter the sporting event, I always try to feel the thrills and for that be with the fans who make all the noise is one of the best solution !

What do you think about the atmosphere at the french stadiums ?

I think that if the French professional league havn’t done bad things for the fans and have asked the real questions about supporters, it would only be better. The groups of fans within in the clubs are doing a lot of work to animate the tribunes and it’s amazing. The atmosphere is not that which can be found in other championships, but I find it better than in England and better than in a majority of Italian and Spanish stadiums too.

It’s sure that the atmosphere could be better here in France, but we must realize the difficulty of the task including unsuitable schedules, lack resources, etc.

Why do you go to the stadium instead of watching it at home on TV or with friends at the bar ?

Both are things I like. But nothing can replace the stadium, the thrill you can have when you arrive at the stadium, climbing the steps, hearing the fervor goes up, see the full stadium. The bar will never replace that, despite the best friends in the world!

Partage ton expérience de fan

You too, share with us your fan experience in an interview sending us an email!

If you had the opportunity to go to one and only one sport event which one would it be ? And why ?

I had the chance to realize some of my dreams already like doing the 4 grand slams of tennis, attending the Olympics, and soon see the World Cup…

However I think that if I had to choose only one it would be a football Derby between Boca and River Plate at the Bombonera… or maybe a Wimbledon final with R. Federer… It’s not easy to choose but these are two really different things that make me dream!

If you were responsible for the fan experience in your favourite club, which ideas or actions would you implement ?

I would try to bring back the fervor in all the grandstands. I would distribute the song lyrics to all the spectators. I would send them on their email one day before the match, videos of supporters and how to sing and react to the songs.

I would also improve the experience before the match with activities in front of the stadiums, as we can see often now, with animations for children. I will do the same for the older ones. In particular, activities tracing the history of clubs to raise awareness about the love of their club.

Thanks a lot Olivier for this story ! We hope too that the Bleus will do a good World Cup in Russia and that you can tell us your experience there ! And now that we are also in New Zealand why not meeting us around there ?!

You can follow Olivier and all the events he’s experiencing on Twitter @baroud4sports, Facebook, Instagram, Youtube and on his web site.
